Today's devotion for today is based on Isaiah 61:1-3, "The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD'S favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor." Jesus stood up in the synagogue at Nazareth and read this Old Testament passage. After rolling up the scroll, he said, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing" (Luke 4: 21). Jesus confirmed that he is the one to give all the blessings of this Isaiah passage. And what great blessings they are! The good news of God's love and forgiveness is proclaimed to poor sinners like us. It is comforting to know that, even in the toughest of times, we still have all we need because we have Jesus, our Savior. Please pray with me the prayer for today: Heavenly Father, gracious God, creator and sustainer of all things, seen and unseen, help me when I try to find security and happiness in this broken world that you alone give me what I need. Amen.
