Today's devotion is based on Psalm 46:4, "There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. There is a long tradition in the church of taking this life-giving river to symbolize the Holy Spirit or the grace of God. The picture is that in our lives – and the Christian church as a whole – no matter what chaos goes on around us, the Spirit of God is an invisible life source that flows secretly in and through us. Thus we do not rely on our own strength for our ultimate protection and peace, or for that matter, to cultivate our own joy. The Spirit of God works these things in us like a secret, invisible, underground river. Please pray with me, "Come, Holy Spirit, Lord, and giver of life! Create and sustain the life of your church and give us joy even amid the trials of this life. In Jesus' blessed name, I pray. Amen.
