Today's devotion is based on Matthew 14:15-16. "Now when it was evening, the disciples came to Him (Jesus) and said, "This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." But Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." While the people of Israel traveled through the wilderness, they could not farm so God provided them with Manna, something that they gathered and made bread from each day. It was God's gift to them. Many years later, Jesus and the disciples were in a similar situation, with 5,000 hungry people out in a deserted place and nothing for them to eat. The disciples had the solution, send them away, but Jesus did not agree with them. He said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." Desperate, they turned to him for help. Jesus provided that day just as he had so long ago. Sometimes it feels like God has given us Christians the same ridiculous order. So what can we do? We can be as honest as the disciples and admit, "Lord, I can't do it. I don't have the resources. You have to tell us what to do." And then we can pray and keep an eye out to see how God provides. He can care for us and those who need help. He can show us the way to go. Please pray with me the prayer for today: Heavenly Father, gracious God, you have given us many examples in your Word that you care and provide for those who are yours. Help us, Lord, to remember that when we are stressed out, wondering how we can accomplish the task before us. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
