Today’s devotion is based on Matthew 14:27, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
In Matthew’s Gospel, this story of Jesus rescuing Peter and calming the water of the storm is meant to reveal who Jesus is. But that revelation is only possible in the midst of the chaos. If the disciples had not embarked on this frightening journey onto the Sea of Galilee, they would have missed the opportunity to see God revealed in their midst. All around us, we can see chaos. We, like the disciples that night, must confront the dangerous and deadly physical and spiritual forces all around us. The good news is that, if we are listening, Jesus’ voice still speaks, “Take heart, don’t be afraid.”
Please pray with me the prayer for today: Heavenly Father, creator and sustainer of all things, seen and unseen, thank you for the gift of your Son Jesus who still today comes to us in our panic and our stress. Remind us that he is God, and thus you, the great I AM is here for us. Take away our fear and help us to trust in you. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
