Since tomorrow is the day that the Christian Church recognizes as Ascension Day, we will look at part of the story of Jesus’ ascension into heaven As it is recorded in the first chapter of Acts. “So when they (disciples)had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.” On the day the church I am serving celebrates Ascension Day I release a Helium filled balloon with the word “Jesus” emblazoned on it. Everyone watches it as it floats up to the ceiling. I do this to help them get a feel for how the disciples acted as they watched Jesus ascend from sight. Can you imagine how their jaws must have dropped as they watched this take place? What power Jesus has! And can you imagine how much that reminder would have helped them in the future? Jesus could lift himself right off of the earth and go up into the sky! The Jesus they served was not only powerful but all-powerful. He’d shown them before, but he showed it to them yet again the last time they saw him. And today, when you get out your Bible and read the whole story of his ascension, he will once again show that power to you. Please pray with me the prayer for today: Heavenly Father, creator, and sustainer of all things, seen and unseen, remind me today that Jesus is an all-powerful Savior, ruling all things for the good of your people. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
