Lord, have mercy.

9-10-22

Today's devotion is based on Psalm 51:10, "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."

When Jesus calls people to follow him, he spells out exactly what that means. It's challenging and can even be off-putting. How would we manage if following Jesus was just left totally to us and our efforts? We would need to ask our God to have mercy on us constantly.

That is the point; we need to call constantly for God's mercy, for without his mercy, as is shown in God's Word, we would be separated from God for eternity. This one verse is a prayer we need to pray every day of our lives. It's a matter of asking God to keep renewing and purifying our sinful hearts. For that is what he does.

Please pray with me; Lord Jesus, you call us to follow you. We cannot do it on our own. We look to you to constantly renew us, refresh us and create in us something new every day. Thank you for your unfailing love and mercy toward us. Amen.
