Today's devotion is based on James 2:8-10, "If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing well. But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it."
It can be easy to feel like we love our neighbor so well that we are right with God. The trouble, however, is found in the phrase: "as yourself." Loving someone that way costs time and effort. It means putting their needs before my own. We don't. Clearly, we cannot be right before God based on how we love our neighbors.
Thankfully, there is one who did right before God. One who always loved his neighbors perfectly. One who never played favorites. Jesus loved his neighbors, including those beating, mocking, and nailing him to the cross. He died for all of us. He died for you.
You are Jesus' neighbor, and he has already demonstrated his perfect love for you. You now have an opportunity to thank him for all he has done by showing that same love to your neighbors.
Please pray with me; Dear Jesus, thank you for the incredible love that saved me from my sins. Bring me to repentance when I don't. Empower me with your love, to love my neighbors equally with the same kind of love you have shown me. Amen.
