As we prepare to celebrate Jesus' birth and wait for his Second Coming, my devotion for today is based on Matthew 11: "Truly, I say to you, among those born of women, there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he." Servanthood does not come easy because it is hardwired into human nature to put oneself above others. Servanthood is the direct opposite of the way the world thinks and works, for servanthood does not put the self first. Genuine, humble service to others is the signature characteristic of the Christian life. That is the way of Jesus. That is to be our way. Please join me in praying today: Lord, we thank you for turning the world upside down with your life. Thank you for modeling servanthood for us. Help us in these challenging times to sharpen our focus on others and to look out for the needs of those around us; in gratitude for what you have done for us. In Your holy name, I pray. Amen
