Today’s devotion is based on Psalm 91, verse 13, “You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet.” Psalms are written in poetic language. Trampling on and crushing deadly animals is not to be taken literally. The writer is using human language to talk about spiritual threats. It is only through the power of the Holy Spirit who works in us and through us as we dwell in the Lord’s shelter. God provides for us. These ‘mortal threats’ refer to when Satan comes against us. Wearing the different parts of the armor that God provides for us is simply to ‘put on’ Jesus; he is our covering! He is our truth, righteousness, peace, the shield of faith, and so on. We overcome Satan by his blood shed for us. He is our covering won for us at the cross! Please pray with me the prayer for today: Heavenly Father, creator, and sustainer of all things, seen and unseen, teach us to stand firm in our faith when we are attacked by sinful flesh, Satan, and those of the world. Help us to remember that Jesus is our protection in times of need. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
