As we near the end of the Christian year, approaching Advent, today's devotion for today is based on Daniel 12:2 "Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt."
Depending on one's faith or lack of faith in Christ, one's soul either goes to heaven or hell at the moment of death. There is no intermediate state in the realm of the dead. Whether we like it or not, this is the Bible's clear teaching.
On Judgment Day, the souls of those who died will be reunited with their bodies. The souls from heaven and the souls from hell. Once united, the second judgment occurs. Believers, both body and soul, will spend eternity with God. Unbelievers, both body, and soul, will spend eternity in the absence of God, knowing that they will never be able to live in God's presence
God sent his Son, Jesus, to rescue people from that fate. Jesus suffered hell in our place on the cross so that our sins do not condemn us to everlasting life absent from God, but instead gives us eternal life in the presence of God. As believers, we are to look forward to awakening on judgment day to everlasting life.
Please pray with me; thank you for all you have done for me. Please help me to live a life that is God-pleasing as I look forward to Judgement Day when I will be reunited with my soul to spend eternity in your presence. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
